How much time do you spend ruminating?

Although it is natural and can be healthy to self-reflect over-thinking can quickly turn to negative self-talk that is excessive and repetitive. This over-thinking pattern is like a car stuck in the sand where the wheels spin without making forward progress. You become mentally stuck in a loop of negative outcomes and effects that can begin to cause anxiousness, anxiety, and depression. You start to focus on how bad you feel, what you have done wrong, and how it can get worse. All of these reactions are paralyzing and prevent you from moving forward and cause mental, emotional and physical pain.

How can you stop the negative cycle? First, notice when your thoughts start to get negative and repetitive. If you are aware of the triggers, you can break the cycle. Immediately change it up; get up and do something else. For example, go for a walk, call a friend or do a guided meditation. You also want to change your thinking pattern and encourage a problem solving and positive thought process.

By living mindfully aware, you harness the power of the present moment to be the master of your thoughts. Live an empowered life by stopping toxic thoughts at this moment and choose a positive-thinking way of life.
