Stop Allowing External Forces to Affect Your Inner Peace

Jun 16, 2023

Many times we allow the world around us to influence and change how we feel in the present moment. Like a surfer overtaken by a wave, a life experience can change how we see ourselves, others and the world around us within minutes. Growing weary from the battering effects of the outer world we become worn down and lose interest in trying to ride the wave with positivity. Recognize that at that moment; you are one with what you don’t want.

So how do you maintain what you desire in the midst of chaos? I believe you have to practice the art of detachment.

For example, if you work for a company being acquired by another company feelings of fear, worry, and lack of security may settle in with your coworkers, and you successfully tune out those negative thoughts. Then you’re hit with someone you report to expressing emotions of irritability, anger, or resentment, and it’s too much, negativity creeps into your thoughts. During these life experiences, practice mindfulness.

By detaching yourself from the situation, not reacting, you see the situation playing out like a movie. View everyone as actors and actresses, including yourself, playing a role in a life situation. You will have to continually check-in and remind yourself to see from this lens and ask these questions:

  • What do I want to happen?
  • How do I truly want to feel?
  • Can I imagine win-win for all?
  • Can I now choose to feel at peace with my here and now maintaining a positive intention for myself and all?

In closing, when you find yourself drifting into that up-close and personal space with external forces that are not what you want to experience or feel, choose to recognize what is occurring, stop and take a detached stance and choose that which you want to think, feel, and experience.
