Don’t Get Stuck in the Problem: How to Stay Solution-Oriented for Mental Wellness

Do you dwell on the problem so much that it is difficult to find a solution?

It is natural that by knowing what you don’t want, you can clarify what you do want. This process is how we identify a problem and begin thinking about a solution.

But what happens often is we dwell on the problem so much that we perpetuate the problem. We become problem-oriented instead of solution-oriented.

This week I encourage you to see the problem or challenge and then focus on resolution. Ask yourself what do want to happen. What would be the best-case scenario? What would be a win-win? Then focus on achieving and seeing that solution materialize.

How do you stay in solution or resolution mode? Be aware of your emotions and thoughts regarding the challenge or problem; encourage better feeling thoughts and feelings. Allow for stillness activities that promote the flow of creativity. For instance, a walk outdoors or a focused breathing exercise as you meditate for a few minutes. Encourage yourself to stop worrying or ruminating and direct your thoughts elsewhere. These exercises will help you break the cycle of dwelling on the problem and, thus, allow the solution to come into view.
