How To Deal With Holiday Stress: 5 Tips
Nov 25, 2019Do you get stressed out around the holidays? Some people love them, and some people feel even worse, especially when they have to deal with certain people that increase their stress.
Here are five ways to cope with stress this holiday season.
1. Smell Some Citrus
There are a bunch of studies that show the benefits of smelling citrus to boost your mood. The citrus can be from fruit or essential oils. Either way, if you’re feeling irritated, grab a lemon wedge and inhale a few times deeply.
2. Take a walk
It might be cold where you’re living this time of year. Regardless, I encourage you to go outside and get some fresh air. Let the sun hit your face and move your body. If you can’t walk too much, then getting outside and breathing in some fresh air out on your front stoop can work just as well.
3. Plan ahead
If you already know that spending time with specific family or non-family members stresses you out, then plan for it. Plan for the chaos. Maybe you have a negative person that likes to put everyone down, including you.
If you don’t see it coming, then you’ll start to feel out of control. The point of planning is to make sure you never give your power away, and you always stay in control. Then going on to the next essential step…have an exit strategy.
4. Have an Exit Strategy
If things get unbearable, have an exit strategy. Maybe it’s a quick “excuse me” while they’re talking and leave the room. Or if they’re hounding you with questions you don’t want to answer, try flipping the script and asking them questions about their life. People love to talk about themselves, and this will get them off your back.
Try and prepare an exit strategy saying ahead of time so that when you see yourself in a situation, you don’t like you can politely get out of it.
5. Practice gratitude
Try and be grateful for everything that you have going on in your life. It can be as simple as being thankful for all the good food you have to eat. And if certain people get under your skin, then practice being grateful for the people you love being around.
These are five fast ways that can help you deal with holiday stress. Even if you implement just one of them, it can help.
If you want even more help, below is a guided meditation to help you through this holiday season. Listen to it right before the event, and you’ll see those people might not bug you that much anymore.
Wishing you all a wonderful and blessed holiday season.
In love and light,
