How to Foster a Positive Mindset
Apr 26, 2022Today, as I reflected on what to share for a mindful moment, I thought I would lead with some information I use in my coaching practice.
Current brain research tells us that we need to hold a positive experience in our attention for 12 to 20 seconds for that experience to go into long-term memory, whereas a negative experience lodges immediately into long-term memory.
As many of you know from social media, this past week was my birthday. I absolutely love my immediate family’s birthdays!!! So, for me, birthdays are a perfect opportunity to put into action the above statement.
To this day, I can recall several of my birthdays and my children’s birthdays, where I can see, taste, and feel with great detail the experience of that birthday celebration!
It fills me with such a wonderfully warm and loving feeling of immense joy and happiness. I draw from that feeling of gratitude often when I have moments when I am down or stressed. Such experiences help me generate a lens of seeing the world with positivity and optimism.
I believe that by encouraging positivity, I attract more positive experiences in my awareness and perception. Now I am by no means encouraging powering through, and ignoring my emotions.
For instance, if I find myself aware that I am feeling and thinking negative thoughts in the present moment, I allow myself to experience what I feel just as it is. Then, trusting that if I choose to foster a good feeling thought and encourage the emotional set point associated with that good feeling, I can begin to shift my state of being for the better.
However, I recognize this process takes time and practice. I also have developed tools/techniques to assist me ( my 4 R program). Be loving and kind to yourself as you try to foster this way of living.
This week I encourage you to notice those moments that feel good and then intentionally hold that moment in your awareness for 20 seconds. Engage all your senses to anchor that experience into your long-term memory.
If you would like to learn my newest 4R program- a Pathway to Inner Peace, where I teach proven tools and techniques to help with this precise anchoring! Click here to schedule your call!
Have a great week, everyone! Nancy
